Episode 180: LGBT Characters in Marvel (with JennytheGeek)

Back in Episode 89, we discussed LGBT characters in DC with JennytheGeek.  Well, after three years, she’s back to discuss LGBT characters in Marvel.  From Northstar’s coming out story to the recent “Pride” issues, we touch on some of the characters we feel the most strongly about, and what Marvel is getting right and wrong in their representation.

So…much…crosshatching! Yes, this came out in the 90s.

Ah yes, waving your arms around. The universal symbol for “You’re gay.”

Deadpool and his Valentine (no really, their name is Valentine)

No subtext allowed. (And yes, there’s a reason Nightcrawler is in a modified Spider-Man costume, but you have to read the story for that explanation…)

Episode 139: Who is John Constantine (aka The Hellblazer)?

One of our listeners just discovered the character of John Constantine, and wants to learn more about him before diving in on his own. So, we look at a bit of the history behind this DC/Vertigo staple, and answer some important questions, like “How do you pronounce Constantine?”

You say Tine, I say Teen. Let’s call the whole thing off…

One of my personal favorite renditions of the character, by artist Darick Robertson.

One live-action adaptation of the character…

…and another. One slightly more comic accurate than the other. At least they both got the drinking right.

He’s crazy, but he’s not that crazy…

Episode 89: LGBT Characters in DC (with JennytheGeek)

Celebrating Pride Month, we are looking at some of the characters in DC Comics that belong to the LGBTQ+ community.  I invited JennytheGeek on to discuss the topic and get her feelings as a trans woman (and fellow superhero fan), on how these different characters were handled.

One slight correction. I referred to Danny the Street as gender-fluid in the show. I meant to say non-binary. My apologies for the mix-up in terms.

Really? I am?

Really? I am?

Close your jaw, Wally…

If you know who the one on the right is, you also know this is a bittersweet ending for Wanda.

Look at that castle. Is this Dannyland?

With a few exceptions, comic book romances rarely end well. This is no exception.

Neither is this…
